"As a 15-year veteran of our organization, Monica has a unique passion for our mission of empowering Humboldt County kids to become great citizens for the future", Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods Board President Rodney Strom said in a statement.

Parents helped their kids pick out shoes, backpacks, and anything to prepare them for the school days ahead of them.

"It is easy for kids to get sidetracked", said Executive Director Jake Erickson. "Some comfortable seating. A nice space for them to come in and work with their mentors".

According to district data, 134 high school students have dropped out of the La Crosse School District during the past five years. The new program is expected to help about 25 La Crosse teens in its initial year.

The celebration of excellence dinner is a time when supporters of the club gather to raise money for the program. The organization is looking for volunteers in the community to provide their time and talents to the program.

As part of the Be Great program, mentors will collaborate with teachers and administrators at Logan to help fill the gap from when the last bell rings and the students arrive at the center. I think more needs to be done and more kids need to be served.

"Pair some of these vulnerable students with mentors and give them the confidence to graduate from high school", Erickson said.

The renovation of the new room is made possible locally through the support of Anthem Blue Cross Foundation and includes areas where kids and teens can participate in educational activities that teach them social skills that enable them to relate to others effectively and how to contribute in positive ways to the culture around them. Through the Triple Play program, Boys & Girls Clubs are influencing the next generation of leaders who are socially and morally sound.
