Rookie Aaron Judge lays down the law in Angels’ loss to Yankees

CLEVELAND – Edwin Encarnacion had three hits, including a two-out, go-ahead two-run homer in the fifth inning, to lift Cleveland over Chicago at Progressive Field.

Quite a turnaround for a guy who was such a huge disappointment in his first year with the Yankees.

“It didn’t start off too well with two Ks”, Judge said.

“I just slowed my tempo down, let my arm get up, just throwing the ball”, Montgomery said.

Judge hit one of five homers on a night when the Yankees set season highs in runs and hits (18) and tied a season best by hitting five homers for the third time this season.

Judge struck out his first two times up and then walked facing Angels starter Alex Meyer, a young righty who impressed the Yankees with his fastball and slider.

Judge never admires a home run. The Miami Marlins’ Giancarlo Stanton holds the all-time record at 504 feet.

As for Judge’s teammates and anyone else, television commentators Michael Kay and Paul O’Neill said, “Oh my goodness” and “Wow”, while Didi Gregorius watched while standing on top of a bench by the railing.

Cobb (5-5), coming off a start Saturday at Seattle in which he allowed nine runs and 14 hits over five innings, gave up one run and four hits. “That’s the word – incredible”.

“He continues to shine”, manager Joe Girardi said. His power is special.

Judge, the reigning AL Player of the Week after recording a.500/.600/1.000 slash line with three homers, six RBIs and 10 runs in six games last week against the Red Sox and Orioles, finished the night 2-for-4 with a walk. “It just shows you what kind of team we’ve got”. “Me and everybody else”.

Judge is doing things so far this season that no MLB player as tall as he is has ever done before in league history. With 353 runs, the Yankees also the league leaders in that category.

Well before Dellin Betances entered for a four-out save, Tanaka served up a long, solo homer to Kole Calhoun on his third pitch of Monday night.

“There was, yeah”, Angels manager Mike Scioscia said when asked if there was consideration given to walking Judge. Brett Gardner said of it: “For most guys, (that) is a double in the gap or a one-hopper cut off for a single”.

Judge’s big day was only part of a huge series for the Yankees at the plate. NY has won three straight, outscoring rivals Boston and Baltimore 25-3 over the last three nights.

Given an extra day to prepare, and avoid the Orioles on Sunday, Tanaka was 0-5 with a 10.72 ERA in his previous five starts – yielding 11 home runs in a span of 22 innings.

The 2017 Baltimore Orioles now sit in fourth place in the AL East division, one game above.500 and a whopping 6.5 games back of the first-place New York Yankees.

Jonathan Schoop hit a two-run homer but the Orioles mustered five hits and none after the fifth inning.

“Right now, they’re swinging the bats, they’re getting themselves in good hitters counts and they’re not missing the fastballs”. I mean, I can see it when he hits the ball really hard.

As a team, the Orioles are hitting for just a.226 average, the lowest in a single month since September ’15. After a pretty good season, Ramirez hasn’t done that great in his last two starts, allowed 11 ER in 9.1 innings. Last Wednesday against the Detroit Tigers, he gave up an unearned run and three hits in six innings but got the loss because the Angels were shut out.

Orioles: Machado hit off a tee, made some throws and fielded some grounders before the game. If the Orioles want any chance at making the playoffs this season, an acquisition of a proven starting pitcher is a must with the lack of reliable pitching in Triple-A Norfolk.
